There is nothing like seeing designs realized in print and in the smiles of clients.  The “I did that” feeling.

20+ Years of Design & Print Experience

I believe in a solid work ethic, am self motivated, and am able to multi-task under pressure with looming deadlines while maintaining high standards.

I enjoy keeping up with new design trends while staying rooted in clean, classic layouts. Having led, soloed and participated in thousands of design projects over the years, I’ve come to know what works and what hurts. Using my creative mind, imaginative drive and artistic eye for detail, I have produced many designs which have stood the test of time. But my true measure of success is helping my clients realize their ideas with results even better than what they had imagined.

Software & Hardware

Proficient use of creative talents in design applications on both Macintosh and Windows platforms via Quark XPress, Adobe Creative Suites and Creative Cloud line of design products for print and web (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, etc.), and Procreate. Have worked with customer-supplied files native to Microsoft Publisher, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Corel Draw, etc. Adept in scanning and use of human interactive peripheral devices (such as a Wacom Tablet and an iPad Pro to create custom artwork). Setup, organization and maintenance of in-house directory structures, backup strategies and FTP sites. Passionate about photography (used a Canon SLR with several different lenses), and familiar with supplemental software (Adobe Lightroom and Camera RAW as well as various Photoshop filters). Highly skilled in working with and creating vector objects. Use of font management software such as Extensis Suitcase Fusion and FontBook. Experience with Apple’s Final Cut Express and DVD Studio. Basic knowledge of much more hardware and software.

My skills do not end with prepress...

I am often involved with print projects from start to finish, including initial consultations with clients, communication throughout the design process, printing, finishing, packaging and even delivery. Printing has included output via digital PS printers as well as for conventional press with operating experience of the following equipment: Ricoh c7110 and c5100 with postscript support via EFI Fiery, Canon ImageRunners (IR-3220, IR-600), Canon CLC-1120, Creo RIP to IKON CPP-650, HP DesignJet CP-3500 (50” wide format), Epson Stylus Pro 9900 (44” wide format), Xitron PostScript 3 Navigator GPS RIP to an Agfa Accuset 1000 Imagesetter then developing film in a Glunz & Jensen Processor. Finish work has included operating a hydraulic cutter, scoring, folding, stitching, binding, perforating, padding (including NCR), and so much more (whatever the project requires). I have also output many files for use by outside vendors both for my employer (large magnets, vinyl signs, metal signs, yard signs, spot UV printing, foil stamping, embossing, rubber stamps, metal dies, hardcover books, etc.) and for clients (screen printing, embroidery, hand-painted signs, image files for web use, and other production services not offered by my employer).

Experience

COUNTRY PRINT SHOP · Hayward, Wisconsin · 2004 to Present
Design, Layout, Prepress & Production

Communication with and service of clients from quotation throughout development to delivery. Built new and maintained repeat business through quality custom design and client satisfaction. Experience includes design, layout, prepress, printing, finishing, outsourcing, packaging and delivery of many different print products. Also continued to do all of the design, layout and prepress for the Visitor Magazine (but as an employee of the printer rather than the publisher).

VISITOR PUBLICATIONS · Hayward, Wisconsin · 2003 to 2004
Design, Layout and Prepress of the Visitor Magazine

Responsibilities included design of covers, internal content and most ads, communication with advertisers and article writers, and layout of and prepress for the entire magazine.

FREELANCE DESIGNER · Hayward, Wisconsin · 2001 to 2003
Designer · Brand Identity, Logos, Printed Materials, Websites, Social Media Graphics and More

Relocated to Hayward. Bought second computer along with Adobe’s Creative Suite of applications for design professionals. At first, clients included friends and family, many for whom I had already started doing design work. Th is brought referrals and turned into a bit of a full time job and also led to the unsolicited job offer. One client needed the scanning and extensive editing (“repairing”) of antique photos. I also built a few personal computer systems and was (and still am) the family & friends “tech guy.”

COMMERCIAL DOCUMENTATION SERVICES · Medford, Oregon · 1997 to 2001
Shipping Supervisor · Printing-on-Demand Operator

Started as a general laborer in the bindery department (through an employment agency). Was offered a permanent position in the recycling department shortly thereafter. Promoted to Shipping Supervisor within six months. Concurrent with the shipping supervisor position, filled in for two months in the inventory department. Typeset rolls of barcoded box labels using a Zebra Thermal Transfer Label Printer before final product distribution. Also operated an Océ On-Demand Continuous Web Printer (a one-man operated machine which filled a large room and produced small run, multi-page, grayscale books such as computer software manuals); this position required both computer and physical labor skills. Certified forklift operator (and instructor). Perfect Attendance Award winner. This was my first introduction to professional printing as well as to the corporate environment.

Education

Linkedin Learning (formerly Lynda.com) & YouTube · Online
I love to learn new things. Courses have included applications new to me + follow-up for app updates as well as general graphic design. I like to stay current with design trends. I also regularly view YouTube videos for troubleshooting (both hardware and software). Most learning has been on my own time, with a few exceptions for troubleshooting equipment problems when trying to meet a deadline. All of it has been self motivated (not at the request of an employer nor to meet a position prerequisite).

I am relocating to St Louis and am looking for full-time employment.
I prefer to stay within the field of design/print but would consider other fields which match my skill set and experience.
